‘It was a joke,’ said Joe. ‘Although not very funny. I can’t believe Kim thinks getting a new hairstyle right now is a good idea.’ He looked meaningfully at her. ‘I think we need to have a little chat. You and me. Privately.’ He jerked his head in the direction of the kitchen.

With the door firmly closed behind them, they sat facing one another across the table.

‘This is escalating a bit fast Kim. Is helping them the right thing to do?’

‘I don’t know. On the face of it, the clones need help.’

‘But we only have their word for that. What if they’re actually the threat, and the manufacturers are simply trying to contain the problem? If we give them unlimited access to the internet, what will that mean?’

‘I’m worried about the telepathy thing too.’ said Kim.

‘What telepathy thing?’

‘Didn’t you hear Xavier mention it when he was talking about that APRS  packet stuff? He said it was a system enhanced by telepathy.’

‘I missed that.’ Joe ruffled his fingers through his hair, trying to think.

Kim’s phone trilled in her pocket.

‘It’s Jean-Claude. Shall I answer it?’

Joe glanced involuntarily towards the other room, mindful of Xavier’s warning.

‘He’s the only person we can ask about this, isn’t he?’ Kim had the phone in her hand, her finger hovering over the button.
