Dear Anna

Later, when they had brought a very wobbly Jean-Claude into the car and reassured themselves he was recovering, Joe had a word with Xavier.

‘How are you feeling now? You look much better.’

Xavier nodded.

‘In that case, could you go and collect Jean-Claude’s bag from the windmill?’

‘Thank goodness you were there Joe. You always know what to do. You’re such a dear. And another thing, what the hell was Xavier doing? He was just watching, not helping.’

‘It’s odd. I don’t think he knew what to do. And his symptoms just vanished, didn’t they? It’s almost as though they transferred from him to Jean-Claude.’ He indicated the Frenchman sitting silently beside him, face pale and bedewed with beads of sweat. ‘At least his pulse has settled now.’

Addressing Jean-Claude, he said ‘You had me worried for a moment back there.’

Jean-Claude had no stamina for anything but a brief nod.

‘Here comes Xavier,’ said Kim.  ‘We’ll get you back to our place and see how you are.’

‘If it won’t be too much trouble-?’

‘No trouble. Your car should be safe here, hardly anyone ever comes to this place. We can collect it tomorrow.’
