‘No! Joe! Don’t do that!’ Kim had seen Joe lean forward to reach for the phone, presumably to search for directions. She had attached it to its charging cable on the dashboard as they set off. ‘You mustn’t turn that on.’
Joe swore under his breath. ‘I forgot. Xavier, do you know how to get there?’
‘I think it would be better to use the smaller roads. If Osborne and Griffiths have sent people to find us, they are likely to concentrate on the main highways.’
‘Good point,’ said Kim. ‘Which way?’
Xavier guided her through a series of turns and they found themselves in quieter lanes with little traffic.
‘We might be over-reacting,’ began Joe. ‘What if the helicopter was nothing to do with us?’
‘I ‘ope it wasn’t,’ said Jean-Claude. ‘But we should still be careful. Anyway, we will soon see ze other sentients and that is ver’ exciting, n’est-ce pas?’
Delphine and Emma exchanged glances. While Jean-Claude had been adjusting Xavier’s controls earlier, there had been a brief moment for them to communicate with each other via APRS without their comments being intercepted. Each had recognised the high level of anxiety in the other but before they could explore the roots of this, Xavier was back on line and they had dropped the thread. All together in the car, there was no way for them to share their concern without alerting the others. They would have to be patient.
