Respectful

When Emma and Delphine decided to try and draw any threat away from Xavier, and more importantly, her Joe, Kim had been appalled but respectful of their self-sacrifice. As they prepared to set themselves up as a lure, she had hugged each of them and asked what she could do.

‘Move away from us Kim. We don’t know who will come or how many of them there might be. You would be safer hidden out of sight - maybe in those trees.’ She pointed into the centre of the grove. ‘You can’t really help and Xavier and the others will still need transport to get away, if they’re safe. Leave us here and drive the car into the shadows over there.’

With a heavy heart, Kim backed the car deep into the trees. Cutting the engine, she knew she couldn’t bear to sit there, not knowing what was happening, so she quietly opened the door, got out of the car and moved nearer the clones, concealing herself behind a study oak. She did not have long to wait.

‘What?’ she heard Emma say and then there was a gasp and Emma and Delphine embraced one another and looked towards where they thought Kim had taken the car. Kim stepped forward.

‘What’s happening?’

‘Alain and the others are doing what we were going to try,’ reported Emma. ‘They are safe and they have a plan.’

Kim wondered how the young woman had extracted all that information from what had been half a second’s connection.

‘As soon as they have something to report, they’ll be back in touch, I know they will. All we can do now is wait.’
