Restrictions

'You'd better check there are no restrictions on his breathing, just before you put him in the box. Don't want him to die on us just yet, do we?’ said Joe.

Kim threw him an appalled look. This was not the docile happy-go-lucky man she usually lived with. Emma checked the tape was clear of Xavier’s nose.

‘Pass me the rest of it, please.’ She held out her hand and when Hugo gave it to her she deftly flipped Xavier over and taped his hands together, behind his back.

‘Legs as well, do we think?’

‘Better protective than apologetic,’ said Hugo.

‘That's not quite it,’ said Kim. ‘It's "better safe than sorry", but yes, absolutely.’

Her work done, Emma stepped back and viewed Xavier objectively. She and Delphine had become increasingly worried about their fellow clone’s behaviour and intentions in the past few days and it was a relief not to have to worry where he was and what he was doing, at least for a time.

Brontë reported that no one was taking any interest in what they were doing, so Kim released the boot catch, and between them they lifted Xavier into the box and put it into the boot, wedging things around it so it wouldn’t move about as they drove.

‘They don't bother with that in the movies,’ said Joe. ‘They just sling ’em in and slam the lid down.’

‘Hmm. This is real life Joe, just imagine-’

‘Yes, I know, but still...’
