Synchronised

‘The meal will be ready in a few minutes. How about you come upstairs with me and I’ll find you something else to wear?’ Kim held out her hand to the calico-clad clone.

Emma rose unsteadily to her feet and took the proffered hand. Kim could feel she needed the support, she was trembling as they walked slowly up the stairs together and into the main bedroom.

‘Sit there, on the bed, and I’ll get some things.’ Kim bustled about, opening drawers and rummaging through hangers in her wardrobe. ‘How about this?’

She turned to show Emma a pair of soft pull-on trousers and a matching pale blue top. She was horrified to see her crying silently, her tears rolling down pale cheeks to tremble on her chin and drop into her lap.

‘Emma, whatever’s the matter?’ In a moment, Kim was beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. ‘Are you in pain?’

The young woman shook her head. ‘No, not body pain. But I hurt here.’ She lifted a hand to her breast.

It crossed Kim’s mind to wonder if a clone had a heart but she dismissed that immediately. Something was pumping blood around the clone’s body, had to be. Either a heart, or something else synchronising the system.
