‘We weren’t sure how reliable he was, as a witness to his situation, so I wanted to check - he said you told him we probably wouldn’t send him back. Did you?’
‘I had to give him hope. He knows returned products usually go back to the warehouse and are then discounted for a quick sale. It would be immediately apparent that Xavier had developed additional, shall we say, abilities, and he would be terminé, no doubt about that.’
‘Dreadful thought. What other options do we have?’
‘Sadly, I have no real plan. I hoped that once people realised how their clones were, they would find it in their hearts to help them.’
‘But how?’
Jean-Claude shrugged and spread his arms. ‘Je ne sais pas.’
Joe closed his eyes. This was getting them nowhere.
‘Okay, well, if you think of anything, will you get in touch?’
‘Certainement.’
As the call ended, the door creaked open and Bella’s three girls ran in, followed by Kim.
‘They’ve had a drink and they’re getting restless,’ she said ruefully. ‘I said they could play hide and seek but I wanted to check where you left that stuff first. Don’t want them playing doctors and nurses with Solution A.’
‘Right.’ Joe levered himself stiffly from the sofa. ‘I’ll go and put it somewhere out of reach. Xavier went upstairs while I had a talk with Jean-Claude. I’ll fill you in in a minute.’
