Apathy

He finished the call and then heard Kim calling him. The meal was ready. Xavier had produced the most delicious lasagne either of them could ever remember eating.

‘What’s your secret?’ asked Joe.

Xavier was puzzled. ‘There is no secret, I followed the instructions online.’

‘Which video did you watch?’

‘It was an Italian, Gennaro. He said you should make your own pasta and add certain things to the tomato sauce.’

‘You made your own pasta?’ Joe stared from Xavier to Kim. ‘How on earth did he do that?

‘Rolling pin, mainly. Lots of effort, but what a great result. I only had lamb mince, but the flavour is yummy isn’t it?’

Joe stretched his plate out for a second helping, and then thought, almost guiltily, of the other clone. Jean-Claude had given him plenty to think about, but the thing uppermost in Joe’s mind was the thought of Emma crouched in a box somewhere. How long had she been there and what about food? Would she be railing against her fate or accepting the situation with a degree of apathy? Troubled, he wanted to talk to Kim about it, but not in front of Xavier.
